How to Clean a 5 Gallon Water Dispenser (Not Just the Jug)
Reading time: ~7 minutes | Dispenser Cleaning Full System Water Safety
You clean your 5 gallon water jug weekly. But when did you last clean the dispenser it sits on? The spigots your family touches dozens of times per day? The internal reservoir that holds water between the jug and your glass? Most households never clean these — and a freshly sanitized jug placed onto a contaminated dispenser is re-contaminated almost immediately. This guide covers the complete dispenser cleaning protocol for every component of your 5 gallon water delivery system.
Why Dispenser Cleaning Is Not Optional
The dispenser is not a neutral vessel — it has multiple surfaces in continuous contact with water, multiple touchpoints that introduce bacteria daily, and zones that never fully drain or dry between use. See the detailed contamination zone analysis in our companion article: Biofilm in Water Dispensers: The Hidden Health Risk.
What You Need
- Food-safe sanitizing wipes or food-safe spray + paper towels
- Easy Jug Clean tablets (for reservoir cleaning)
- A small bottle brush for spigot nozzle interiors (the one context where a small brush is appropriate — the nozzle is a short, accessible tube, not a deep narrow container)
- Your dispenser's manual for reservoir drain valve location
The Complete Dispenser Cleaning Protocol
Weekly Tasks (Every Time You Clean the Jug)
1
Wipe all spigot exteriors with a food-safe sanitizing wipe. Include the nozzle tip, the lever or push-button, and the area immediately around each spigot. These are the highest-touch surfaces on the entire dispenser and should be wiped every week without exception.
2
Empty and rinse the drip tray. Remove the drip tray insert, pour out any standing water, and rinse with clean water. Dry with a clean paper towel before replacing. Standing water in the drip tray is a direct bacterial and mold growth zone.
3
Wipe the jug seating area and probe. At every jug change, wipe the probe (or piercing mechanism) and the collar/seating area with a food-safe sanitizing wipe. This is the contact point between the jug and the dispenser water pathway.
Monthly Tasks
4
Clean the spigot nozzle interiors. For dispensers with removable nozzles, remove and soak in a dissolved Easy Jug Clean solution (1 tablet in a cup of warm water) for 20 minutes. For non-removable nozzles, use a small nozzle brush to clean the interior channel, then flush by dispensing several cups of fresh water.
5
Deep-clean the drip tray. Remove the drip tray completely and scrub with warm water and a food-safe cleaning solution. Check for any mold growth in corners or under the grid insert. Allow to fully dry before replacing.
6
Wipe all exterior panels. Use a damp cloth or food-safe wipe on all exterior surfaces including ventilation slots, the top panel, and side panels. Accumulated dust and organic particles on the exterior can be drawn into the unit by its cooling/heating fan.
Quarterly Tasks (Every 3 Months)
7
Deep-clean the internal reservoir. Unplug the dispenser and allow it to reach room temperature. Locate the drain valve (typically a red or blue cap on the rear of the unit — consult your manual). Prepare a cleaning solution of 2 Easy Jug Clean tablets dissolved in 1 liter of warm water. Pour through the jug seat opening into the reservoir. Allow to soak for 20–30 minutes. Open the drain valve and drain completely. Flush with 1 liter of fresh water through the reservoir, drain again. Replace the drain valve cap and plug in before replacing the jug.
8
Inspect all water-contact components for damage or degradation. Check the probe for corrosion, the internal tubing for kinks or discoloration visible through the casing, and the nozzles for cracking or permanent staining that doesn't clear with cleaning. Components showing significant degradation should be replaced.
