You cleaned your water jug. You could smell the cleaning product working. You rinsed it thoroughly. And then, a day or two later — sometimes almost immediately — the smell is back. Six Reasons a Smell Persists After Cleaning — With the Right Fix for Each
Reason 1: The biofilm source wasn't destroyed — only disturbed
If you cleaned with soap, vinegar, or a brush, you disturbed the biofilm colony but didn't destroy the EPS matrix or kill the bacteria within it. Surviving bacteria resume metabolic activity within hours, producing geosmin and 2-MIB again. The smell disappears temporarily (while bacteria are recovering) then returns once metabolism resumes.

Reason 3: Residual cleaning product is producing the smell
Inadequately rinsed vinegar, dish soap, or bleach leaves compounds in the jug that off-gas into the water and headspace. The "chemical" smell you detect is the cleaning product residue, not bacterial contamination. Ironically, this is most common in users who cleaned very thoroughly with the wrong product.

It was really easy to clean, just drop it in and let it fizz and do its cleaning magic! The jug smelled and looked soooo clean after using this, I couldn’t believe it.
I tried to use these to clean my 2 5gal NATO Sceptor plastic jerry cans. They had a thin yellow biofilm in them. I treated both twice, following your instructions (warm water, let them sit 30min, rinse before/between/after). And they did essentially nothing. I still had the same yellow biofilm everywhere when I wiped the inside with a paper towel. I used a whole bag on EACH can. None of them really foamed at all unless I violently agitated them, and it went away quite quickly. It was a complete waste of time and money. I wish I could get my money back to try another method. I don't know if I got a bad batch since they didn't really foam, but it was a total waste of time.

Easy Jug Clean was developed specifically for cleaning 3 - 5 gallon drinking water jugs especially those used for water dispensers.
We've had customers report good results with other large plastic containers as well, but results can vary depending on the container, what it's made of, the type and severity of buildup, and what the container has previously been used for.
Regarding the lack of foam, it's mostly only visible fizzing from within which can be seen from the side view of transparent 5 gallon water jugs rather than from the top view. The tablets are designed to dissolve in water and release their cleaning ingredients.
That said, you treated each container twice and still found the yellow biofilm remained, so we understand why you're disappointed. We'd like to look into this further rather than dismiss your experience.
